but the elf slipped out of the withered leaf, pced hiself by the ear of the sleepg girl, and told her, asa drea, of the horrid urder; described the pce where her brother had s her lover, and buried his body; and told her of the liree, full blosso, that stood close by.

“that you ay not thk this is only a drea that I have told you,” he said, “you will fd on your bed a withered leaf.”

then she awoke, and found it there. oh, what bitter tears she shed! and she uld not open her heart to any one for relief.

the dow stood open the whole day, and the little elf uld easily have reached the roses, or any of the flowers; but he uld not fd ithis heart to leave one so afflicted.

In the dow stood a bh bearg onthly roses. he seated hiselfone of the flowers, and gazed on the pirl.

her brother often ca to the roo, and would be quite cheerful, spite of his base duct; so she dare not say a word to hi of her heart’s grief.

As soon as night , she slipped out of the hoe, a to the wood, to the spot where the liree stood; and after reovg the leaves fro the earth, she tur up, and there found hi who had been urdered.

哦,她哭泣着祈祷自己也能死去!她很想把尸体带回家;但那是不可能的;

oh, how she wept and prayed that she also ight die! Gdly would she have taken the body ho with her; but that ossible;

so she took up the poor head with the closed eyes, kissed the ld lips, and shook the ould out of the beautiful hair.

“I will keep this,” said she; and as soon as she had vered the body aga with the earth and leaves, she took the head and a little sprig of jasihat bloodthe wood, he spot where he was buried, and carried the ho with her.

“Farewell, farewell,” whispered the little elf. he uld not any longer eo witness all this agony of grief, he therefore flew away to his own rosethe garden. but the rose was faded; only a few dry leaves still g to the green hedge behd it.

“As! how soon all that is good aiful passes away,” sighed the elf.

After a while he found another rose, which beca his ho, for aong its delicate fragrant leaves he uld dwellsafety.

Everyhe flew to the dow of the pirl, and always found her weepg by the flower pot.

the bitter tears fell upon the jasiwig, and each day, as she beca paler and paler, the sprig appeared treener and fresher.

one shoot after another sprouted forth, and little white buds blossod, which the pirl fondly kissed.

but her wicked brother slded her, and asked her if she was gog ad. he uld not iage why she was weepg over that flower-pot, and it annoyed hi.

he did not know whose closed eyes were there, nor what red lips were fadih the earth.

And one day she sat and leaned her head agast the flower-pot, and the little elf of the rose found her asleep. then he seated hiself by her ear, talked to her of that evengthe arbor, of the sweet perfu of the rose, and the loves of the elves. S

weetly she dread, and while she dreat, her life passed away cally aly, and her spirit was with hi who she loved, heaven.

And the jase opes rge white bells, and spread forth its sweet fragra had no other way of shog its grief for the dead.

but the wicked brother sidered the beautiful bloog pnt as his own property, left to hi by his sister, and he pced ithis sleepg roo, close by his bed, for it was very lovelyappearance, and the fragrance sweet and delightful.

the little elf of the rose followed it, and flew fro flower to flower, tellg each little spirit that dwelt ihe story of the urdered young an, whose head now ford part of the earth beh the, and of the wicked brother and the poor sister.

“we know it,” said each little spiritthe flowers, “we know it, for have we not sprung fro the eyes and lips of the urdered one. we know it, we know it,” and the flowers nodded with their headsa peculiar anner.

the elf of the rose uld not uand how they uld rest so quietly iter, so he flew to the bees, whatherg honey, and told the of the wicked brother. And the bees told it to their queen, who ahat thethey should go and kill the urderer.

but durg the night, the first after the sister’s death, while the brother was sleepghis bed, close to where he had pced the fragrant jase, every flower cup opened, and visibly the little spirits stole out, ard with poisono spears.

they pced theselves by the ear of the sleeper, told hi dreadful dreas and then flew across his lips, and pricked his toh their poisoned spears. “Now have we revehe dead,” said they, and flew bato the white bells of the jase flowers.

when theca, and as soon as the doehe rose elf, with the queen bee, and the whole swar of bees, rhedto kill hi. but he was already dead.

people were standg round the bed, and sayg that the st of the jase had killed hi. then the elf of the rose uood the revenge of the flowers, and expi to the queen bee, and she, with the whole swar, buzzed about the flower-pot. the bees uld not be driven a> 然后一个人把花盆拿起来要把它移走,一只蜜蜂蜇了他的手,于是他让花盆掉了下来,花盆摔得粉碎。

then a an took it up to reove it, and one of the bees stung hithe hand, so that he let the flower-pot fall, and it was broken to pieces.

then every one saw the whitened skull, and they khe dead anthe bed was a urderer.

And the queen bee hudthe air, and sang of the revenge of the flowers, and of the elf of the rose and said that behd the sallest leaf dwells one, whodisver evil deeds, and punish the also.
