On Judgment Day(2 / 2)

the soul rhed on to escape the ugly screas, but the huge bck birds sweptcircles, screag out their vicio words louder and louder, as though they wished to be heard to the ends of the world.

the soul fled like a huag, and at every step stubled agast sharp flt stones, pafully cuttg his feet on the.

“how ca these sharp stones here? they see like re withered leaves lyg on the ground.”

“Each stone is so careless word you have spoken, which wounded your neighbor’s heart far ore deeply than these sharp flts that now hurt your feet.”

“I hought of that!” cried the soul.

“Judge not, that ye be not judged!” rang through the air.

In a ont the soul revered fro its self-abasent. “we have all sned. but I have kept the Law and the Gospel. I have done what I uld do; I a not like the others.”

And theood at the gates of heaven itself, and the Angel who guarded the entrance asked, “who are you? tellyour faith, and show it toyour works.”

“I have faithfully kept all the as,” replied the soul proudly.

“I have hubled yselfthe eyes of the world. I have hated and persecuted evil and those who practice it, and I would do so still, with fire and sword, had I yet the power.”

“then you are a follower of ohad?” said the Angel.

“I? Never!”

“ ‘he who strikes with the sword shall perish by the sword,’ th spoke the Son. his religion you do not have. Are you then pere of the children of Israel, who with oses said: ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth?’”

“I a a christian.”

“I see it heryour faith noryour as! the teag of christ is fiveness, love, and rcy!”

“rcy!” the echo of this rang through fite space, the gates of heaven opened, and the soul hovered toward the reals of eternal bliss.

but the flood of light that stread forth fro with was so dazzlg, so peg, that the soul shrank back as fro a double-edged sword. And the sound of ic was so soft and toug that no ortal tongue uld describe it. the soul trebled and prostrated itself lower and lower, and the celestial light cut through it until it felt, as it had never felt before, the weight of its own pride and cruelty and s.

“whatever good I have dohe world, I did becae I uld not do otherwise; but the evil that I did-that was of yself!”

And ore and ore the soul was dazzled and overwheld by the pure light of heaven; it seed fallg to a bottoless abyss-the abyss of its own nakedness and unworthess.

Shrunk to itself, hubled, cast out, unfit for the Kgdo of heaven, treblg at the thought of the jt and holy God, hardly dared it to gasp, “rcy!”

And the Angel of rcy ca to hi-the rcy he had not expected; andthe fite space of heaven, God’s everstg love filled the soul.

“holy, lovg, glorio forever shalt thou be,huan spirit!” sang the chor of angels.

And as this soul did, so shall we all, on our st day oh, hubly treblethe glorio sight of the Kgdo of heaven.

but the fite love and rcy of our heavenly Father will carrythrough other spheres, so that, purified and strengthened, we ay asd to God’s eternal light.
